Robotic Camera Systems & Virtual Production

By Kieran Lowley

We have been an on epic journey into the world of Virtual Production this past year.

September saw us upgrade our offering to 3 render engines and separate hardware keyers. Ocotber sees the introduction of MRMC Motion Control Robotic Camera Systems – the final piece in our technology jigsaw. We are introducing the new 2m MRMC QRS slider and 4m RLS lift system, allowing us to offer smooth and repeatable camera movements that really raise the game.

Elevating Storytelling with Cutting-Edge Technology

Our new MRMC QRS Slider marks a significant advancement in our offerings.

With its precision, flexibility, and ultra-quiet operation, it empowers our clients to push the boundaries of storytelling. Complementing this innovation is the 4m Rail Lift System, which provides the same remarkable benefits as the QRS Slider, but with the added benefit of both side-to-side and vertical lift motion. With a range of height configurations, the RLS-1 can comfortably capture sitting and standing shots without the need for reconfiguration.

Together, these tools enable us to create repeatable movements both as a slider and a jib, significantly expanding the variety and complexity of shots we can deliver.

The versatility of the MRMC QRS and RLS systems makes them ideal for a wide range of applications across the film and broadcast industry:

•  Feature Films and Documentaries: Their precision and smooth operation are invaluable for capturing dramatic scenes and intricate documentary shots where every detail counts.
•  Commercials and Music Videos: The QRS/RLS systems enable creative shots that elevate production quality, making them perfect for advertising and music video productions.
•  Live Events: In live broadcast settings, the ability to create dynamic, controlled movements enhances viewer engagement and storytelling.

Uniting Technologies for a Revolutionary Experience

When we combine our new MRMC technology with Sony FR7 cameras and Brainstorm Infinity Set virtual production software, we create a truly exciting offering. Utilising our FreeD Merge Box, we can synchronise FR7 camera movements with our rail systems in real time.

The FreeD Merge Box allows for precise tracking and synchronisation of camera movements within virtual environments, ensuring perfect alignment between live-action footage and digital elements. This results in a cohesive final product that opens up a world of creative possibilities previously deemed challenging. By linking the position data of our FR7 with MRMC rails, we enable fully repeatable, robotic camera movements within the Brainstorm Infinity Set virtual engine.

Our next update will see us introduce facial tracking into our technology chain, meaning that our cameras will use state of the art software to track talent on screen. Combining MRMC QRS and RLS robotic camera systems with FR7 facial tracking will make our offering the most robust on the market.

Now, why is this technology combination important? Because in Virtual Production, camera movement is everything.

When a camera is static, an audience’s eyes begin to look around for imperfections, making it more difficult for them to suspend their disbelief. This is exactly why the MRMC QRS and RLS systems in combination with Infinity Set is perfect – we can create smooth, repeatable camera movements inside fully virtual sets, and using our new hardware keyers we can create the perfect key.

All of this allows us to create the most realistic, dynamic images available on the market. This combination - alongside our ability to manipulate virtual environments in real time - facilitates dynamic storytelling, broadcast-quality virtual production, and cutting-edge visuals.

It is the perfect solution for any production.

Proven Success in the Field

We have successfully deployed this technology for high-profile clients, including Jimmy Fallon and several major corporate productions, all benefiting from repeatable robotic camera movements within fully 3D virtual worlds.

We couldn’t be more excited about our new offerings and encourage anyone looking to leverage this groundbreaking technology to come and see it for themselves.
